Finally, after all this time the new Speed Racer movie’s trailer is out! Looks like a lot of fun is going to be had at the movies for us fans of the original tv series. It goes all the way back to the 1960’s to a Japanese comic book called “Mach Go Go Go” by the legendary Tatsuo Yoshida.

I have a particular fondness for this classic cartoon as it was one of the first few Anime tv shows to hit the U.S. when I was a kid. I was fortunate to have gotten many of the Japanese manga books back then so when the show hit the air I was surprised at the name changes but it caught on fast. I spent days having fun trying to draw Speed Racer and the other characters.
If you can, go find the Speed Racer DVDs of the original series. They are just so much fun especially the fast-talking dialogue that is hysterical. When we get together and talk about the good ol’ days of this show we poke fun at the way the characters would talk non-stop an entire dissertation of dialogue without taking a breath.
The stories were what got us kids back then and our parents too. The stories were heads and shoulders above the rest of most of the animated fare back then as is standard in Japanese storytelling. People would be mesmerized and spiritually changed by the Japanese storytelling which continues to this day.
Let’s hope this movie lives up to the tradition.
I can’t wait to see Christina Ricci as Trixie and John Goodman as Pops Racer. I do a great impersonation of Pops Racer and my friends who are race car drivers often ask me to yell at them like Pop Racer before they race. They get a kick out of it.
